Friends, neighbours, former customers and local businesses are rallying to support an embattled elderly couple who face homelessness at a time in their lives when they should be enjoying a well-earned retirement.
Bill Bostock and his wife Susan, who ran BP West Hobart for 38 years until they were forced to close their business when their lease was not renewed, stand to lose their family home if they are unable to raise $50,000 within 14 days to pay outstanding business debts accrued during the tough years.
Bill and Sue were so loved and appreciated by the community that when they closed the doors of the service station on 22 July 2010 for the very last time, hundreds of well-wishers gathered to show their appreciation for their years of loyal service. A guard of honour was formed along Arthur Street as the family was transported to the Queens Head Hotel where a special farewell celebration followed.
Since the closure of the business, Bill, who turned 74 last week, has been unable to gain full-time work. In the last year, Bill has undergone radiation therapy for cancer, was hospitalised with an infection that led to septicaemia and has battled with other serious health issues. His wife is on a disability pension due to poor health.
In an attempt to raise the funds to help save their family home, the Bill Bostock Benefit will be held from 1-4pm on Sunday, 22 March, at the Queens Head Hotel. The afternoon will feature music by Ian Paulin, Rowan Smith and Mark Clemens, as well as tarot readings by Sara Hewitt and a silent auction. Entry is $10. Everyone is welcome!
Donations can be made at the Commonwealth Bank (BSB 067 028, A/c 1031 3072), or online at http://www.gofundme.com/nc3ufw.
The Bill Bostock Benefit is proudly supported by the Queens Head Hotel and Mark Media.
