The Tasmanian Labor Opposition rejects the death penalty as an appropriate judicial response to crime.
Denison MP Madeleine Ogilvie says the situation facing Andrew Chan and Myuran Sukumaran is impossible to ignore.
“Put simply we do not support the death penalty, here or elsewhere,” Ms Ogilvie said.
“Whilst we do not seek to extend our laws to foreign nations, we do seek to influence outcomes when the death penalty is the most final of outcomes.
“As a lawyer I have acted for refugees who would be subject to the death penalty provisions of international jurisdictions if they were returned to their country of origin. Specifically, we have a group of Vietnamese asylum seekers in just this situation.
“Like many Tasmanians I do not support the death penalty. Further, I support all efforts of the Labor Opposition, the Australian Government and our community leaders to press for clemency for the two Australians currently on death row in Bali.”
