Earlier this week i spoke to Sally Cameron, a member of a Capella group ‘The Idea of North’. The group is visitingTassie this weekend for the second time this year and are looking forward to reconnecting with their, as Sally says, ‘wonderful and loyal audience’. Sally loves Tasmania and especially performing in ‘the very beautiful oldest theatre, The Theatre Royal, however this time the group visited a new venue St David’s Cathedral, which will well suited their Repertoire of Ballads by Candlelight’ show and the acoustics will be amazing.

As mentioned, although the group are very eclectic with their material that encompasses jazz, opera, gospel and comedy, Sally says they have no preferred genre and although ’serious about their music, they are not too serious’ and their performances contain their trademark humour and artistic honesty.

And how did they come along with the name The Idea of North. Sally says it was one of the founding members MegCorson who devised it. Meg was a great fan of Glenn Gould from ‘The Idea of North’ 60s radio program, and so they adopted the name, something they were keen to do after once being introduced as the four got their name, a thing they were especially eager to do after being introduced at one stage as the four bananas, the group with a-peel!

On this visit The idea of North will also be promoting their album ‘Anthology’, the best of 21 years of recordings.

Idea of North appear at St David’s Cathedral tonight (Friday) at 8pm.

Their album Anthology is out now by ABC music.
