A Tasmanian Experience

Morris Miller Library, Sandy Bay Campus, Churchill Avenue,

University of Tasmania

To be opened by Nicola Hodgman

Exhibition curator Dr Nicola Goc takes great pleasure in inviting you to attend the opening of the Migrant Women Snapshot Photography – A Tasmanian Experience Exhibition at 11am on Friday June 6 2014 at the Morris Miller Library.

Between 1946-1976 thousands of migrant women from Britain and Europe arrived in Tasmania and along with migrant men and children they were part of the largest number offree migrants to arrive in such a short period of time in the island state. These women have rarely had the opportunity to reflect upon their experiences of migration. Through this unique micro-exhibition, the public can hear thestories of migrant women told through their snapshots and listen to their voices retelling their experiences. The exhibition creates a bespoke domestic period setting to reflect the home environment in which migrant women and their families interacted with family photography. A display of local Tasmanian newspaper coverage at the time adds further context to their experiences ofmigration.
