Woolworths and Coles - There are Alternatives, Shop No. 2 4

Shop number two was undertaken on Saturday 24 August, comparing alternative retailers with Coles at Sandy Bay. Results are shown on the attached spreadsheet. All food and grocery items purchased in the preceding two weeks were compared with Coles prices. Not all items were purchased on Saturday 24 August, but the Coles prices applicable on 24 August were used for comparison purposes.

This week, some good value bulk buys at alternative retailers meant the alternative shop was more than $70 cheaper than Coles. The savings at Eumarrah and the South Hobart Butchery were also significant.

Keeping track of expenditure on food and groceries has been very illuminating. We’re spending a fortune – I may need to consider bread and water rations – and if we were shopping at either Woolworths or Coles, we’d be getting a far more limited choice for the privilege of supporting an arrogant, dismissive corporate duopoly.

We’re voting on Saturday. Maybe we should look for candidates that support local producers and retailers rather than lazily, and uncritically supporting the supermarket status quo.

For owners of ice cream makers, an excellent, good value recipe for vanilla ice cream follows:

Ingredients

2 cups whipping cream
½ cup whole milk
¾ cup caster sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla essence

Method

Whip 1 cup of cream until soft peaks form. Stir in remaining cream and whole milk gently. Stir in sugar and vanilla essence. Churn mixture in ice cream maker for 20 minutes or until desired consistency. Turn into a suitable container and freeze until completely firm.
