• PARKING DAY PUTS PEOPLE BEFORE CARS

Greens Environment Spokesperson and Member for Denison Cassy O’Connor has congratulated the super efforts of businesses in Hobart for transforming car parking spaces into people-focused “pocket parks”.
“Our city streets could be so much better used than as a place for empty, parked cars,” Ms O’Connor said.
“September 21st is Parking Day,

an international event and a creative way to highlight the potential of our streets to be transformed through imagination, from car parks to people spaces.”
“The increasing traffic congestion, and lack of comfortable public spaces, seating and shade makes Hobart’s CBD less attractive to people.”
“With many bricks and mortar retailers already struggling to compete with online shops, we need to be thinking about ways to make the city’s retail precinct more attractive.”
“There’s no doubt the Hobart CBD would benefit from a people-focused upgrade to bring more people into the city.”
“Cities are, after all, about people,” Ms O’Connor said.
Parking Day is an annual world-wide event where local citizens, artists and designers take over metered parking spaces in their cities and towns for the day or a few hours and transform them into public spaces.
