Tasmania’s southern and eastern police districts will be merged into one from September 1 in a move expected to save Tasmania Police $635,000 a year as it attempts to slash up to $18 million from its budget.
The restructure is one of a number of strategies the Police and Emergency Management Department is implementing after the state government cut funding to its budget in June last year.
Police Commissioner Darren Hine said today that the restructure will also examine geographical boundaries of police districts, assess potential for efficiencies in support commands and specialist units, as well as seek expressions of interest from officers and State Service personnel in regards to redundancies.
