We all have shackles of some sort that pin us to the ground and stop us from flying above the ordinary.
The recent “CEO sleepout” highlighted the plight of 100,000 people in Australia who are sleeping rough each night.
It must be fair to say that these people are short of their potential with little chance to fly.
Across the world there are far worse situations where the fight to live through the day is the best achievement possible and hardly productive for the planet as a whole.
In Tasmania, we are deeply blessed by locale, resources and most importantly our community, but most folk are held back from being all they can be.
What are the props that sustain us and are they good for us as a nation?
Alcohol, tobacco, gambling, drugs of addiction, religion and a range of community opiates all serve to keep the peace and supply us with a sense of worth.
These are the props that bind us as a community, but these are also the shackles that prevent flight and see us building our community like a spider on LSD building a web.
What about those choices we make?
We blame government and our politicians for our woes and to some extent, that is a fair call, but the finger of blame should be pointed to us as individuals, for we hold the key to the choices we make, even when our lives are at their lowest.
The choice to start smoking and passively share that with the kids, have a few drinks and go for a drive like they do at Symmons, drop the pay-packet into the poker machine rather that filling up on groceries, or tithe to the wealth of the church for a better afterlife.
Well, perhaps they all seem good at one time and of course many of these pastimes are condoned by government and society at least at the point of introduction and that is a choice that leaves much to be desired.
How do we find that threshold where we can begin to fly and become productive as a society?
I have found when something is jettisoned that does you no good in life, then something of worth immediately fills that void.
This may be a habit, people on paths of self destruction, or something as simple a negative manner of thought.
We are all as one on the road to a destination and we all have choices to make which will influence our lives and the lives of everyone else on this fishbowl planet.
What will be the good choice you make today?
