The White Australia Policy seems to be alive and well and it’s affecting our job security!!!!
An article was published in The Western Australian on 28 March 2012 titled,‘More Irish, More Luck for All’, in which was discussed the State of Western Australia’s plans to bring across 150,000 Irish on working visas.HERE:
At a time when job security is a serious issue and when there is so much economic instability internationally as well as nationally, this seems like a move that will ensure many deserving Australians miss out on jobs.
What I can’t understand is: Why there isn’t an outcry from the public?
Where are the usual complaints of ‘immigrants are taking our jobs’? Is it because people don’t mind having their jobs taken by people that look like them?
I can imagine the fuss that would be made, if the government announced it would be bringing in 150,000 Africans, Indians, Asians or people from the Middle East to do work.
We claim that we can’t possibly accommodate a few thousand asylum-seekers and then the government goes and makes a move like this. Something doesn’t add up.
What makes this decision OK and were the general public consulted on this decision? If not, I would say that this is a serious breach of democratic process as such a move will impact on our culture and economics significantly and we have a right to comment on such a decision.
Also, why has Ireland been chosen specifically? Why not a number of different countries? This move doesn’t seem to match Australia’s claims of being multicultural and diverse.
Currently, thousands of Australians are being laid off work on a weekly basis. How can the government be planning to give jobs to people from other places, before looking after it’s own citizens? Why weren’t skilled unemployed Tasmanian laborers chosen to fill this need, for example?
I would suggest that there is more to this plan than meets the eye and that it could even be another version of the White Australia Policy in operation and an excuse to quickly dilute the multicultural mix that has been building up in Australia.
The government is supposed to be there to protect and look after the needs of it’s citizens. Australian citizens should demand that the government rethink it’s plans and source jobs for Australians first, before it looks abroad – especially for such a large number of jobs. It should also be honest about plans, in terms of cultural development, in our country. If the government does genuinely need to source jobs from other countries, it should be a number of different countries to reflect our claims of being a multicultural nation.
