ABC Northern Tasmania’s Drive presenter Roisin McCann has been chosen to roll-out a national training scheme for ABC Local Radio regional staff. Roisin will take up her position on Monday October 24.

On announcing her new role Rois said, “Over the last few years I have worked in radio training and development for short stints and really enjoyed the challenge of the training room and developing course content. In some ways after 10 years with the ABC I’ve gone full circle. I was employed under a regional initiative and given heaps of great training and mentored really well by colleagues. Now I get a chance to do the same.

The hardest thing about leaving the on air shift is leaving listeners who have been so willing to share their stories and to give their perspective on the issues and events in our community. It’s a privileged position and I have learnt so much from them.

Radio is my great passion. I think it is the medium that can best connect and touch a community. It has unlimited potential and I look forward to working with new and emerging broadcasters as they explore the wonders of this medium and tell the stories of regional Australia and regional Australians.

Best of all I’m staying in Tasmania and look forward to listening to Penny on the drive home.”

Jocelyn Nettlefold, Local Radio Manager, Tasmania, noted that Rois McCann’s award-winning Drive program has become an integral part of Northern Tasmania, “Listeners know they can rely on Drive to find out what’s going on in their community and appreciate the fact they always have the chance to share their experiences and opinions.

“Rois is highly valued by her audience and the ABC. While upcoming radio presenters will be enriched by her talents, I know Rois’s on-air company will be missed by many.”

Popular breakfast presenter, Penny Terry will take over the role of Drive presenter for ABC Northern Tasmania and listeners will welcome Belinda King who moves into the Breakfast Chair.
