6th October
Pollock
Directed by Ed Harris
Starring Ed Harris, Jennifer Connelly
Rated MA 15 +
The romantic notion of suffering for one’s art has been cinematically rendered in countless films, depicting the lives of real life artists ranging from Van Gogh to Camille Claudel to Beethoven; but rarely has a film penetrated as deeply as `Pollock,’ directed by and starring Ed Harris as the abstract painter Jackson Pollock. It is said that the artist `sees’ the world differently than the average person, which may be true; and it is that unique `vision’ that sets the artist apart. And Pollock was no exception to the rule.
13th October
Exit Through the Gift Shop
Directed by Banksy
Starring Banksy
Rated MA 15 +
Exit Through the Gift Shop, the first film directed by reclusive street-art legend Banksy, is a little puzzle-box of a documentary. It’s perfectly designed and pitched to be enjoyable on multiple levels: on one as an entertaining, illuminating mini-history of “street art” and on another – one entirely more convoluted and entertaining – as a light-hearted “up yours” to both street artists and their patrons.
20th October
Helvetica
Directed by Gary Hustwit
Rated PG
A documentary about typography, graphic design and global visual culture, that looks at the proliferation of one typeface as part of a larger conversation about the way type affects our lives.
27th October
Unfolding Florence
Directed By Gillian Armstrong
Rated PG
In this spirited and highly original documentary, acclaimed director Gillian Armstrong (Charlotte Gray, Oscar and Lucinda, Little Women, My Brilliant Career) reveals the many lives of one larger-than-life woman – flamboyant Australian design pioneer, Florence Broadhurst.
