Where are methyl bromide tests? 4

The Tasmanian Greens today (Wed) described as extraordinary the fact that responsible entities, including Tas Ports, appear to not have examined the blood test results of the crew kept on board the Black Sea, when its cargo of logs were fumigated with methyl bromide.

Greens Member for Braddon, Paul ‘Basil’ O’Halloran MP, said that the apparent blasé attitude to the potential health risks posed by the fumigation process to these international crew members is shocking and disappointing.

“The very reason the methyl bromide fumigation of these logs was moved offshore was in recognition of the health risks posed to the Burnie community, and we argued that it was wrong and unacceptable to lock the ship’s crew on board and expose them to the very same health risks.”

“It is now of grave concern that this appears to have been taken so lightly that one of the responsible authorities, TasPorts, apparently has not even sighted the blood tests of those crew members who were kept confined on board.”

“This is an outrageous development and I will be perusing this matter at tomorrow’s (Wed) Forestry Tasmania scrutiny hearings.”
