NUS welcomes the High Court’s decision to allow Youth Allowance recipients to claim tax deductions for their educational expenses.
“This is a fantastic win for students. The result of this case is going to ease the financial pressures on students, and mean that students are more likely to be able to afford things like books, course materials and laptops. It will also assist students, particularly regional students, with travel costs,” said Carla Drakeford, President of the National Union of Students.
“The Youth Allowance system acknowledges that there are students who need government support to continue their study in higher education. Students now having the ability to claim educational expenses will further enhance the government’s plan to encourage students from disadvantaged backgrounds to attend university,” she said.
