Socialist Alliance's Vision for Local Government in 2026 4

It’s time for Socialism – Statement from lutruwita Socialist Alliance

With the outcome of the recent State snap election returning Tasmania to cronyism and business-as-usual, now is the time to ask: “Is this just how things are?”

Socialist Alliance answers: “No. It does not have to be…”

A better today is possible, one that starts locally in our communities and puts the power right where it belongs, in to your hands.

That is why we will be running candidates in the upcoming 2026 LGA council elections.

We will empower people to decide and apply solutions they know they need, democratically. We will not be afraid to use a big stick when monied interests throw their weight around.

We will be your delegates, as we have been for almost 40 years…

Do you want to remove rate-payer subsidised perks for lazy non-productive rentier capital; replace multiple rates and costs with a single broad minimum-effective flat rate Unimproved Land-Value Tax using Site Value Rating; fund bus shelters for every stop, your street getting to decorate theirs; make penalties fairer percentile ones, based on income; propose Instant Recall, making it possible to fire your councillors outside of election season?

None of these potential proposals are socialism, they are just good for society!

So as we work towards revolution in our daily lives, and within the powers of the Local Government Act 1993, you and we can change “just how things are” for the better, today.

And it starts in your local community in 2026!

There are many challenges impacting us all right now. From having materially enough homes to make homelessness almost disappear and rents go down, yet financial incentives encouraging the opposite; public transport barely functioning, its workers and passengers being abused and left in the cold; cost of rates, rubbish, and roads keeps going up, but councils are deeper in debt than ever before…

So reclaim your power to make decisions that impact you every day, seize the means to create the proposals you demand implemented, and join Socialist Alliance as we re-register with the Tasmanian Electoral Commission today!

It’s time for Socialism.
