Two resignations in the Legislative Council

Resignation of Josh Willie

Today, Her Excellency the Governor informed the Electoral Commissioner of the resignation of Josh Willie. A by-election will be held to fill the vacancy in the Legislative Council division of Elwick.

Section 66 of the Electoral Act 2004 allows that a by-election triggered between 1 January and the day the writs are issued for the periodic Legislative Council elections, be conducted concurrently with those elections.

Resignation of Jane Howlett

The Governor has also advised of the resignation of Jane Howlett today, creating a vacancy in the Legislative Council division of Prosser.

The upcoming periodic election for the division of Prosser means a separate by-election to fill this vacancy will not be required.

It is now expected that polling day for the divisions of Hobart, Prosser and Elwick will be Saturday 4 May 2024.
