Free soil workshops to help farmers improve productivity
Farmers in Tasmania’s north west are invited to free workshops to help them better understand their soils and improve productivity.
The workshops in Ulverstone and Smithton next week are being delivered by Ag Logic and the Tas Farm Innovation Hub through funding from the Future Drought Fund (FDF).
Marek Matuszek from Ag Logic said the workshops were a good opportunity for farmers to learn more about linking soil type with soil moisture and weather data to improve productivity.
“This is a great opportunity for farmers to come along and learn more about their soils in an interactive and practical way,” Mr Matuszek said.
“The workshops will investigate soil moisture and local weather data on the Ag Logic weather station network and how to incorporate this data into farm decision making.”
Tas Farm Innovation Hub Director Sandra Knowles said it was important for farmers to get the most out of their soils to ensure economic and environmental benefits.
“Healthy soils are essential for successful food and fibre production, water storage, filtration and nutrient cycling and carbon storage,” Ms Knowles said.
“A changing climate and other pressures pose major challenges for our farmers in the management of our fragile soil.
“These workshops will give farmers the tools to better understand their soil from a local perspective and use this knowledge to plan for the future.”
The workshops will be held at the Beachway Motel at Ulverstone on 20 June, 9am to 1pm and at Tall Timbers at Smithton on 21 June, 9am to 1pm.
