Kingborough Thrives Campaign Launch

Kingston Beach (BBQ Shelter – opposite the Salty Dog)

The contest for seats on Kingborough Council is hotting up. Under the group name Kingborough Thrives, three women who describe themselves as “dynamic, progressive and independent”, are co-launching their campaigns at Kingston Beach on Sunday. All three women have strong backgrounds in being a voice for their community. They foresee that becoming Councillors and Deputy Mayor will amplify their positive impacts on our region.

The coming October election is the first time compulsory voting will affect all Tasmanian local government elections. In early October, voting ballot forms will be mailed to each Kingborough resident enrolled to vote. The Kingborough Thrives candidates are keen to gain first, second or third preferences as a result of the wide appeal of their values-based independent approach.

One Kingborough Thrives candidate, Clare Glade-Wright is a sitting Councillor and is standing for Councillor and Deputy Mayor. Clare has immensely enjoyed her first year as a Councillor, “I’m proud to have brought my values to council decisions over the last year,” she said.

Jill Hickie has been representing residents for many years as President of the Taroona Community Association and is standing for Councillor. “I’m passionate about caring for our natural environment; and my professional background with planning and the City of Hobart has prepared me well for working proactively on council.”

Di Carter has already made her mark on the accessibility of Kingston Park through her participation in the Kingborough Council Inclusion and Disability Access Committee and is also standing for Councillor. “I want to make Kingborough Thrive and become an even accessible and equitable place to live, work and play.”

Kingborough Thrives formed in 2020 as a group of engaged local residents seeking to increase active involvement in democracy. Through a set of Kitchen Table Conversations, a World Café event and one-to-one conversations they’ve listened to find out what our community wants. As a result, at the heart of Kingborough Thrives is a genuine desire to for a thriving local economy, thriving environment and thriving community.

All three candidates are looking forward to meeting a swag of Kingborough voters on the day.
