ADVOCATES CALL ON TAS TO FOLLOW A.C.T. LEAD ON PROTECTION FOR INTERSEX CHILDREN
Tasmanian advocates have called on the state government to ban unnecessary, non-consenting surgeries that seek to ‘normalise’ intersex children.
The call comes after the ACT Government became the first in Australia to unveil draft legislation that seeks to prevent such medical interventions.
Intersex Peer Support Australia, Tasmanian representative, Simone-lisa Anderson, said,
“We know that young Tasmanians who are born with innate variations of sex characteristics still suffering unecessary surgeries and other medical interventions and that these interventions cause pain and trauma their whole lives.”
“In 2019 the Tasmanian Law Reform Institute recommended a ban on these medical interventions, but nothing has happened since.”
“We urge the Tasmanian Government to move quickly so no more children suffer.”
Intersex Human Rights Australia has welcomed the ACT initiative.
