SCORECARDS REVEAL WHERE BASS AND BRADDON CANDIDATES STAND ON ANIMAL WELFARE
The Australian Alliance For Animals has released election scorecards on the Bass and Braddon candidates to show where they stand on four major animal welfare issues, including phasing out the live sheep export trade.
In its response to the Alliance for its national scorecard released yesterday, the Labor Party said it intends to phase out live sheep exports if elected (as covered by the Australian Financial Review today https://www.afr.com/politics/federal/labor-to-push-for-ban-on-live-sheep-exports-20220503-p5ahyh).
The electorate scorecards from key seats show individual candidates’ responses on four key animal welfare issues: phasing out live sheep exports within three years; establishing a national Animal Welfare Commission to oversee the development of national animal welfare standards; creating a federal Ministry for Animal Welfare and establishing a national Animal Welfare Fund to invest in initiatives to improve animal welfare.
Animal welfare is certainly a growing concern among voters. A Roy Morgan Research poll in March found that 98 per cent of Australians think animal welfare is important and 94 per cent support laws that will ensure animals have a good quality of life.
The media release and national, Bass and Braddon scorecards are attached to this email.
In addition to a national scorecard showing where all the major parties stand, the Alliance has compiled an additional 20 scorecards for all candidates in key seats including Bass, Braddon, Wentworth, Kooyong, Mackellar, Goldstein, North Sydney, Corangamite, Curtin and more. Please contact me for any other electorate scorecards you would like to see.
It is important to note that the Alliance as a charity does not endorse any parties or candidates or direct people how to vote. The scorecards aim to inform the public on the position of all parties and candidates on key animal welfare issues.
