Sixt Managing Director Matt Beattie said today’s announcement further strengthened their commitment to Tasmania.

“Our deep local area expertise in vehicle rental, paired with the Sixt brand, will help us provide the best possible service to the communities in which we operate,” Beattie said.

“Our launch in Tasmania will ensure the future of car and truck rentals in the region keep pace with the innovation we’re starting to see in capital cities.

The expansion represents a refresh of the industry in Australia and we are committed to building on our local knowledge and unique customer service experience built up over years of being part of the local community.”

The NRMA, which has operated in the car rental industry in Australia since 2006, is behind Sixt Australia.

Rental car availability has been in difficulty since the peak of the pandemic, when companies sold off their fleets to help make ends meet. Insiders say the industry is recovering, but rental availability is still relatively low.

The announcement coincides with the unveiling of an initial 40 MG EV and 25 Tesla 3 vehicles, making it one of the largest EV fleet for hire in Australia today, which will be available at key metropolitan Sixt locations.

NRMA is aiming to convert half of its 16,000 nationwide rental fleet to electric within five years to help deliver on the nation’s net zero emissions target and, as a by-product, speed up the creation of a second-hand EV market in Australia.

The following Sixt locations will be operating across Tasmania:

  • Launceston City – 1A Hudson Fysh Drive

  • Launceston Airport – Terminal Building, Launceston

  • Hobart City – 65 Argyle Street

  • Hobart Airport – Terminal Building, Hobart

  • Burnie City – 24 North Terrace
