UN International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women
Zonta Club of Hobart-Derwent are hosting a breakfast on Wednesday November 24 at 07.15 to launch the UN Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women.
Guest speaker is Yvette Cehtel, current CEO of Tasmanian Women’s Legal Service.
We hold this event because we want to raise awareness of the extent and consequences of sexual and physical violence.
This is a central part of the work of Zonta International. It is part of the partnership approach we have adopted to engage with Tasmanian organisations. In Tasmania the Hobart-Derwent Club has been involved from day 1 in partnering with Citizen Tasmania in the production and dissemination of the One A Week video.
It is part of our, the Zonta Club of Hobart Derwent, organised programme for the year in partnership with Citizen Tasmania to clarify areas of action within Tasmania. There are as many ideas for solutions as there are problems.
Building a coalition of concerned, interested people leaves scope for involvement in many different ways: from supporting emergency shelter; to innovative long term safe housing options; to educational activities to improve understanding and recognition of the issues in both men and young people, to looking at options for legislative changes to support the elimination of violence against women.
It is from meeting Yvette Cehtel through this process that we decided that she would be an engaging speaker in a field which is all too rarely described knowledgably.
We believe this is an important and timely issue. We are not promoting the event itself but more so the awareness of the subject matter.
