SUE NEALES Mercury Comment
By coincidence, that night on the ABC’s The 7.30 Report, a short segment looked at the Bartlett Government’s contentious plan to push a $23 million tourist road through the Tasmanian Tarkine wilderness. At the end of the report, presenter Kerry O’Brien turned to the camera and said: “And today the Tasmanian Government has announced it will abolish its Environment Department.” The facts were accurate and the take-home message to viewers clear. In one simple and straightforward riposte, the damage done to Tasmania’s reputation as a “clean, green and clever” island with untouched natural beauty and a forward-looking, caring Government was immeasurable.
