LISA Singh has been accused of promoting one of her political staff members to a senior job in the state public service. The Workplace Relations Minister confirmed yesterday in Parliament that her ministerial office chief of staff, Kerrie Crowder, had been selected to become Tasmania’s new Director of Building Control. The $120,000-a-year position is of senior executive service level one status within Ms Singh’s departmental area of responsibility, Workplace Standards Tasmania. Tasmanian Greens building industry spokesman Kim Booth yesterday slammed the appointment, saying that, once again, “this is about this Government giving jobs to its Labor mates”. He demanded to know if Ms Crowder’s appointment was based on merit. In reply, Ms Singh said angrily that it was wrong of Mr Booth to imply something underhanded had gone on and it was entirely unfair to Ms Crowder. She said the job of Director of Building Control had been advertised nationally last November and the selection process had been entirely bureaucratic. “This was a very open and proper process at arm’s length from the Government,” Ms Singh said, confirming that Cabinet had noted the appointment at its Monday meeting.
