Back to the future
I grew up around this area and spent much time fishing, crabbing or generally running amuck. Older, more adult locals had the same sort of memories and they didn’t want to see their fishing playground destroyed. There were protests, there were studies, there was even violence and sabotage. The developers said that it’d be good for the region, yadda, yadda, yadda. Newly fledged environmentalists pointed out the unique nature of the bay area.
The Local Government Minister of the day, one Russ Hinze, approved the development and it went ahead. These days people know it as Raby Bay. Home to millionaires and freaks. Some of the houses and shops have had really bad settling problems. Rumour had it that one of the blocks of shops was just short of being condemned. In addition to this the canals are silting up and there are ongoing discussions as to just who is responsible for clearing them. There are algal blooms from runoff, bull sharks to take swimming pet dogs and noisy next door neighbours. Read more, Comment here
