MEDIA RELEASE

The COPP Trust has developed a substantial capital investment base to finance social, wellbeing and enterprise initiatives that will assist sexual and gender diverse people (rainbow people) in Tasmania’s regional communities to ‘come out with pride’ and live in their community with dignity as fully respected and participating members.

The Trust (COPP) represents self – determined regional philanthropy that will provide support, protection and survival of sexual and gender diverse people in local & regional communities with funds generiously donated by community members. The COPP Trust for this reason is owned by the COPP Community Liaison Committees (CLC) and associated organisations at local/regional level as follows;

• Application for micro project funding will require the approval of local and regional CLC’s and be part of the local/regional management planning
• Applications require matching funds from other local, regional sources i.e. state, local government or private sector to ensure maximum commitment and use of available funds.
• Ensuring a balance of Trust governors at regional level will ensure local ownership and participation in both raising capital funds and application.
• The ‘small grants’ program will be up to $500 to be matched
• Administrative costs of the CLC will be funded within the local regional allocation

The COPP Trust has established five funding areas for 2009 and invites applications or matching funding from local self – determined organisations as follows.

To support the COPP Community Liaison Committee & endorsing Councils develop and implement a management plan to assist local sexual and gender diverse people. The following amounts have been allocated;

• $2,000 each to the Nth West Coast/West Coast and Greater Launceston/East Coast Communities ($4000,00 total)
• $1,000 each to the Greater Hobart (including Glenorchy and Clarence municipalities) Communities and the Kingborough/Huon Municipalities ($2,000 total).

$2,000 has been appropriated to Switch Board supporting a promotional campaign for the phone counselling services as well as developing a manual detailing appropriate mainstream and special local/ regional services for the LGBTI Communities in the State.

Four regional small grants of $500 (2,000) have been allocated to GLBTI victims of hate crime working with local police and the COPP Community Liaison Committees. This is in line with the GLBTI Tasmanian Police Liaison Committee which recently produced the posters and leaflets on ‘the rights and support for LGBTI people experiencing hate crime in the State.

While no funding has yet been appropriated the COPP Trust is raising a capital base to assist in the development of proposed GLBTI Suicide Prevention Grants. These will be developed in line with the recommendations of the Tasmanian Suicide Prevention Council Consultation Report due to be released in late January 2009.
