If someone dies without a valid Will, the law decides who receives their assets and families can face delays and uncertainty. Yet around half of Tasmanians still do not have one.

To help address this, the Royal Hobart Hospital Research Foundation (RHRF) is offering free online Essential Wills to Tasmanians from 16-30 March 2026 as part of Charity Wills Week.

RHRF CEO Stephanie Furler said writing a Will is one of the simplest ways people can protect their loved ones while also supporting causes that matter to them.

“Having a valid Will gives peace of mind that your loved ones will be looked after and that your wishes will be carried out,” she said.

“After taking care of your family, even a small portion of your estate can help support life-saving medical research and improve healthcare for future generations of Tasmanians.”

Furler said gifts in Wills already play an important role in supporting new equipment, services and innovative medical research at the Royal Hobart Hospital.

The RHRF was recently honoured to receive a generous gift in the Will of the late Graeme Cherry, a community-minded man from northern Tasmania who believed strongly in helping others.

Graeme chose to remember several charities in his Will, ensuring the causes he cared about during his lifetime would continue to make a difference well into the future.

“Through our Foundation, Graeme’s generosity will now support vital medical research to benefit Tasmanians for generations to come,” Furler said.

To make writing a Will easier, the Foundation has partnered with Australian provider Safewill, allowing people to create or update a legally valid Will online in as little as 20 minutes.

Tasmanians can write their Will from the comfort of their own home during the promotion period.
