Mark Strochnetter will make history today when he plays his 346th game for Tasmania against New South Wales—becoming the most capped player in the state’s lawn bowls history.

In representative sports terminology, a “cap” marks each game a player is selected to compete for their state, making this milestone a measure of extraordinary consistency and longevity. Over nearly 27 years since his 1998 debut, Strochnetter has averaged roughly 12 to 13 selections annually, maintaining the level of performance required to be consistently chosen across three decades—a feat unmatched in Tasmanian lawn bowls.

While state-level competition differs from international sport like the Olympic Games, this record reflects genuine excellence and dedication within Australia’s domestic sporting structure.

STROCHNETTER TO BECOME THE MOST CAPPED PLAYER IN TASMANIAN LAWN BOWLS HISTORY

Longford’s Mark Strochnetter will play his 346th game for Tasmania on Friday afternoon against New South Wales at the Devonport Country Club and in doing so will become the most capped player in Tasmanian lawn bowls history.

Mark Strochnetter has been a staple part of the Tasmanian men’s open team since his debut in 1998. Mark Strochnetter is the most recent male Tasmanian to represent Australia, which he succeeded in doing in 2003 after three years in the Australian Under 25 side and prominent performances on the national stage including an Australian Super Singles and an Australian Open Pairs title.

Strochnetter has had an illustrious career in Tasmania being crowned Tasmanian Bowler of the Year in 2007 and 2009, as well as claiming eight State Championship titles.

Strochnetter was the inaugural coach of the Tasmania Tridents in the Bowls Premier League from 2022 to 2024 and was a member of the Bowls Tasmania Board for several years.

Strochnetter was crowned Bowls North Bowler of the Year in 2013 and 2023 and has claimed sixteen Northern Championship titles.

Mark has been a member of the Bowls North team in Statewide Challenge since 1995.

Strochnetter is a Life Member of the Longford Bowls Club. He has been a member of the Club’s Division One / Premier Division premiership team on eleven occasions, and the team went on to win the State Premiership three times.

The Tasmanian Open Men’s and Women’s teams will form a guard of honour for Mark before his record-making game against New South Wales and he will be presented with a Huon Pine plaque by Bowls Tasmania CEO, Rob McGuire, in recognition of his achievement.
