The sale of the former K&D site in central Hobart has sparked hope from groups like YIMBY Hobart and the Greens, who see it as a pivotal opportunity for medium-density housing, mixed-use development and revitalising the city centre.

YIMBY Hobart welcomes news of K&D site sale
YIMBY Hobart has welcomed news that the former K&D site in central Hobart has been sold, describing it as a once-in-a-generation opportunity to deliver homes, public space and activity in the heart of the city.
The new owner has described the site as a “landmark acquisition” and a chance to “deliver lasting benefits for all Tasmanians.”
YIMBY Hobart says those benefits should start with new homes and a mixed-use precinct that strengthens the city centre.
“The buyer is saying all the right things about wanting to create something meaningful for Hobart, which is very encouraging” said YIMBY Hobart spokesperson Susan Wallace.
“We know making something great happen here, including housing, will take all three levels of government working together.”
“Building medium-density housing is harder than ever right now,” said spokesperson Lachlan Rule. “But that’s exactly why this project matters. If governments want to show leadership on housing and liveability, this is where they can prove it.”
The group says the K&D site remains Hobart’s most important urban renewal opportunity: flat, central, well-serviced and capable of supporting medium-density housing alongside community and commercial uses.
“This site has the potential to become a genuine mixed-use precinct: homes above, active streets below, and commercial and public spaces woven through” said Wallace.
“This sale gives Hobart a real chance to demonstrate what good urban development looks like,” Rule said.
“The community is ready for a project that helps solve the housing crisis and brings life back to the city.”

Sale of Former K&D Site Presents Opportunity for Hobart
UTAS has sold the former K&D site in central Nipaluna/Hobart to an as yet unknown buyer.
Given the level of community interest in ensuring this prime location realises its full potential as a place for people that enhances city life, the Greens hope the new owner stays true to their public statements about the site representing ‘a once in a generation opportunity.’
The new owner also seems to recognise their ‘responsibility to contribute meaningfully to Hobart’s future.’ Hear hear.
In recent months, the Greens have stood with a broad cross section of the community, including Hobart Councillors, YIMBY Hobart and the Committee for Greater Hobart in calling for the site to be developed as mixed use, with medium density, affordable housing and commercial activity at street level.
We all lobbied UTAS to choose the right buyer. Here’s hoping they have.
The world’s best cities are places where people can live, work, shop and play. We need more homes and small businesses in and near the CBD for Hobart to be its very best self as a modern, liveable city.
The hard work starts now. It’s clear building medium density housing in Hobart has its challenges, particularly from rising construction costs.
All levels of government and all colours of politics have a role to play in delivering on the vision for this amazing site.
The Greens understand the new owner is open to conversation about the possibilities with the Hobart City Council, Homes Tasmania and the Albanese Government. This is encouraging.
We fully support commitment and collaboration from all levels of government to make sure the former K&D site is developed for homes, businesses, with green spaces – a place for the people of our great city.
