Extinction Rebellion Targets Hobart CBD

Posted on

Despite making our primary focus upon Launceston, Extinction Rebellion has occasionally carried actions in greater Hobart, Richmond, Perth, Deloraine, Devonport and Burnie when we feel that is required.

Both the Tasmanian and Australian Governments have for decades underplayed the climate crisis facing our state, nation and the world. Our first demand is for governments to tell the (whole) truth.

To keep pressure on our state government, it is critical that citizens speak up in our capital city.

We want to be visible, creative and engaging on the streets of Hobart.

There are also a number of federal politicians based in Hobart. It is vital that we keep these representatives aware front of mind of the urgency of the climate crisis. Australia is already seeing large insurance increases, increases in extreme storm, ocean inundation, flooding, heatwaves, bushfires and much more. Yet is treated as just one of many pressing issues.

In an emergency there must be focus of mind.

Governments know how to go on a war footing when the nation is facing attack. Humanity has unwittingly declared war on the life-support systems of earth. This is a war we cannot win. We urgently need all national governments to press for stronger action.

Hobart is also the key centre of Antarctic and Marine studies in Australia. The Australian Antarctic Division, UTAS and the Institute of Marine and Antarctic Studies draw numerous scientists to the city from around the world.

It is critical that Tasmanian citizens speak out in Hobart alongside the more muted statements of climate scientists.

Hobart is also a critical centre for Tasmanian forestry. Tasmanians are custodians of one of the largest remaining tracks of wilderness on earth.

In an era of biodiversity loss our remaining forests are a critical element in the fight to save life on earth.
