Statement – Victor MacIntosh, Convenor, York Park Alliance, 30 July 2025
Letter of solidarity to – Tasmanian elected Independents/Greens/Labor
In looking at the polling on questions asked of candidates during the election campaign on your stated policy, there exists in most every poll the following issues: No new stadium/yes team, renegotiate with AFL, Marinus Link, housing, healthcare, education, wind farm locations and salmon farms (moved ashore).
The majority of Independent/Greens voters voted for you to ensure these ideals you supported during the campaign are not compromised.
From the non-responses, by Liberals and Labor, to most of these issues from published polling matrices; it was evident they would not compromise on any of these issues.
In fact, they also campaigned on further enabling legislation to ‘fast track’ Projects of State Significance; to shut down the EPA and EPBCA submissions and cultural concerns; further weakening due process and due diligence and any hope of transparent governance. They do so as they continue to delay release of reviews available since March and May.
So, Independents, with a clear electoral mandate (from your voters for Independents) and the election of Independents, in greater numbers, you cannot form a government with Liberals running the state.
Trust and sincerity has not been reestablished with closed doors secrecy ensuring any agreements you might make will not be upheld.
Independents, can only uphold the wishes of their voters, if they reach an agreement with Labor/Independents/Greens form government. Labor needs to be willing to compromise with your mandates. It cannot be the other way around.
The compromise that the Independents and Greens can offer, is, ‘We will allow you (Labor) to govern with our support; we cannot water down nor remove conditions that we were elected on.’
The most recent threat to call another election, if Independents don’t fold, is their choice not yours, as an independent or Green member of Parliament. I can’t see the Governor granting such an insane request in any case. So, the threat is moot.
A Vote of no-confidence, remains the reason we went to the polls coupled with parochial ideals of greed and the outdated ego of achieving a majority government.
Do not compromise, in particular under the threats of ‘blame’ that if you do not cooperate you are just a ‘naysayer’ and ‘blocker’. It is time to get out of the schoolyard sandpit with the bullies and make a coalition government work for the people of Tasmania.
If you compromise on the above issues you campaigned for you will be acting against your constituents that you represent.
Your position with Labor/Liberals,
‘I ran for the people, the People elected me to uphold those issues and to bring maturity and commonsense to governance. The people have spoken to me on these issues, therefore I cannot or will not, ever compromise with state destroying policies.’
Don’t lose the faith voters put in you!
