Media release – Peter George, MHA-elect for Franklin, 1 August 2025

Statement by Peter George, MP-elect for Franklin

I held a second discussion with caretaker Premier, Jeremy Rockliff today, which included more substantive issues than our first introductory meeting.

I expressed concern that the Liberal Party and Mr Rockliff continue to operate in autocratic ways that undermined the prospects of a well-run, cooperative minority government that will endure for a full four-year term. (See letter to Mr Rockliff [attached] sent yesterday)

Our conversation covered core issues that I prosecuted during the election campaign and which received overwhelming electoral support, with primary votes exceeding all others including Liberal ministers and the Labor Opposition leader.

I made it clear to Mr Rockliff that my support for a minority government would be contingent on progress on issues that are of concern to Franklin voters, including:

  • ending industrial salmon expansion in waterways and an eventual transition out of our island waters.
  • prosecuting the case for Tasmanian AFL teams but abandoning the vanity project of a Macquarie Point stadium.
  • undertakings to quickly legislate and resource proper integrity and anti-corruption measures and ensuring Right to Information laws service public needs for transparency rather than government and bureaucratic secrecy.
  • A phased ending to native forest logging.

I also made it clear that I intend to work with all parties and individuals in Parliament – including members of the Legislative Council – to ensure good governance and essential collaboration across party lines on fundamental issues such as budget repair, with particular focus on improving housing, education and health outcomes for Tasmanians.
