Nationals Confirm ‘No Coalition Deal’ Prior to Election
Media release – National Party of Tasmania, 12 July 2025
NO COALITION AGREEMENT IN TASMANIA
The Tasmanian Nationals confirm they will not enter into any coalition agreement with the Tasmanian Liberals, prior to the state election on 19 July 2025.
There has been growing media and community speculation about the Nationals automatically supporting a future Liberal Government, however this is not the case. Many of the current Liberal policies are at odds with the policy positions of the Nationals and will require refinement of amendment, prior to reaching any agreement in the future.
The Tasmanian Nationals candidate for Lyons John Tucker, himself a former Liberal Member of Parliament, said voters were unsure of the arrangements between the two parties.
“The Tasmanian Nationals do not have any agreement for a coalition, nor supply with the Tasmanian Liberals. Any suggestion otherwise is simply false.” Mr Tucker said.
Current Members of Parliament, Miriam Beswick and Andrew Jenner, confirmed that neither they, nor the Tasmanian Nationals were locked in to provide support to the Tasmanian Liberals for the next term of Parliament.
“I want to assure the voters in Braddon, as well as in Bass and Lyons, should any party find themselves in a position to form a minority Government, we will only discuss these matters once the whole picture has become clear.” Mrs Beswick said.
Mr Jenner was clear in his position as the election approached, “I will not offer support or supply to another Jeremy Rockliff style Liberal Government, without a major shift in the Government’s support for the rural areas of Tasmania”.
