BREAKING GROUND: HAWLEY FORESHORE SHARED PATHWAY BEGINS

The long-anticipated Hawley Foreshore Shared Pathway Project is set to break ground on Monday, 24 March 2025.

First proposed in 2022, this exciting project is the culmination of extensive community consultation and careful planning, bringing to life a shared vision for improved access and enhanced recreational opportunities along the stunning Hawley foreshore.

Importantly, the design of the shared pathway reflects a deep respect for the sensitivities and fragility of the coastal environment. A variety of construction methods – including concrete pathways, elevated boardwalks and lookouts – have been carefully selected to preserve the natural integrity of the foreshore; providing safe and accessible connections for the community and delivering enviable views.

To expedite construction and minimise disruption, the works were offered in sections through the tender process, allowing multiple segments to be undertaken simultaneously.

Tasmanian company Walters Contracting has been appointed as the contractor for Sites A, C and D of the project.

Site A, located near the Port Sorell Surf Life Saving Club, will deliver a new and improved beach access. This vital upgrade will support the club’s important summer patrols, as the existing access will ultimately become unavailable once the elevated boardwalk at Site B is installed.

Site C involves the construction of a high-quality exposed aggregate concrete pathway, improving accessibility and connectivity along the foreshore.

Site D will feature a combination of elevated boardwalk with a lookout offering sweeping views over the picturesque Port Sorell Estuary and the Dazzler Ranges, before transitioning back to an exposed aggregate concrete pathway as it approaches the Hawley boat ramp.

Works on Site A are scheduled for completion prior to the Easter school holidays to ensure minimal disruption during this time of high community use. Construction on Sites C and D will commence immediately following Site A’s completion and are scheduled for full completion by the end of June.

Simultaneously, the next tender package will be released, enabling the continued roll-out of the shared pathway project, which will ultimately stretch over 1.4 kilometres.

Mayor Peter Freshney of Latrobe Council said, “This pathway has been a shared vision of our community since 2022 and is a once in a generation project. It has been carefully considered, balancing improved access with the protection of our precious coastal environment. We are proud to see it progressing and, once complete, it will offer a fantastic way for locals and visitors to experience our beautiful coastal environment.”

Council thanks the community for their patience and support as construction gets underway and looks forward to delivering this long-awaited community asset.
