Toni Childs, Emmy winner and Grammy nominee, is taking songs and stories old and new on her ‘A Retrospective’ tour around Australia.
When we spoke, Childs warned jokingly ‘Watch out guys’ and that she’s on the way to love you up ‘with songs that are positive and uplifting because we need some soothing and light in our hearts to turn away from the fear’.
Childs was particularly keen to visit Tasmania, telling me about her many happy times sailing boats in our waters. Childs said that she was looking forward to soaking up some time with ‘that community near the river’.
Before Childs was a musician, she was an aspiring playwright and wrote two plays at age fourteen, to deal with her feelings ‘of anger and upset, of the time’. This was also when she left home and found herself auditioning at an open mic competition, not knowing it would lead to a life in music.
Childs is grateful that she became a citizen of Australia and talked about how she has landed in ‘a honeypot’. She loves the Australian saying fair dinkum and the whole idea of being ’authentic and just decent human beings- in spades!’
Childs also spoke to me about a documentary on the Great Barrier Reef (Reef 360) that she and her husband created, which is going to tour Australia in a dome (Childs will be singing underwater, mermaid-like to a whale and dolphins) The aim is to encourage children and adults to care for the ecosystem and even adopt a coral reef, for the practical application thereof!
Another wonderful thing about Toni Childs is the coverage she gives on her Facebook page to amazing little-known women from history, such as Celia Payne, who discovered what the universe was made of, and Alice Parker who invented central heating. Go on, look them up! As well as the dates below.
Child will be performing in Tasmania on the following dates and venues:
