Kingborough takes Pride in their cake

The 2025 Tas Pride Summer Festival is off to a delicious start, and now with the much-anticipated Great Kingborough Bake Off taking place on Saturday, 22 February, from 10:00 to 12:00 at the Kingborough Community Hub.

This fun and festive event is not only a highlight of the TasPride Summer Festival but also a heartfelt tribute to the beloved Farm Gate Market/TasPride partnership which began as an acknowledgement to Chris Jackman of Jackman and McCross fame and continues to this day. Chris was a passionate advocate for the LGBTQIA+ community, known for his unwavering pride, incredible spirit and love for baking and it is so fantastic to see the council running a cake competition in collaboration with TasPride.

The Great Kingborough Bake Off will celebrate inclusivity, creativity, and the unique contributions of LGBTQIA+ individuals in our community.

In a world where we have seen an increased expression of hate toward diverse communities, events like this are more important than ever. They foster an environment of inclusion, love, and acceptance—values that many of us live by. As social media trolling becomes more prevalent, it is more critical than ever for communities to come together to reject hate and promote love, respect and understanding.

The Great Kingborough Bake Off will feature an array of decorated cupcakes and cakes, with prizes including Minimax vouchers worth $200 and $500, a Salty Dog voucher of $100 and a Train voucher worth $100.

This year’s panel of judges will include:

  • Dr Nurman Noor, Kingston GP and finalist 2022 Great Australian Bake Off
  • Kirsten Bacon, The Kingborough Cook
  • Sielito, Vice President of TasPride Inc.

Members of the community are encouraged to join the fun, enjoy a cuppa and vote for their favourite cake in the People’s Choice Award.

This is an all-inclusive event, welcoming people from all walks of life. Whether participating as a baker or cheering from the sidelines, it is a wonderful opportunity to be part of a vibrant, accepting community.

Entry for the Great Kingborough Bake Off has been extended until Thursday, 20 February—so there’s still time to submit your entry! For more information and to access entry forms, visit Kingborough Council’s events page or head to https://events.humanitix.com/bakeoff.

The TasPride Summer Festival will run from 1–28 February 2025, with numerous other events planned throughout the month.

Join us as we celebrate community, creativity, and the spirit of inclusivity that makes Tasmania such a special place for everyone.
