The ongoing plight of the permanent residents at the Beauty Point Tourist Park in northern Tasmania is now well known.

Letters of concern have reached the highest levels of government at both state and federal levels. The forced evictions of residents have been told in both the media and other platforms including Facebook and YouTube.

The stories have revealed harrowing experiences of stress, worry and loss of assets – in some cases residents have lost everything, many of whom have called the park home for many years. They had entered into an arrangement whereby they owned their dwellings on a rented site.

Over time a thriving little village grew, with street names, gardens and real sense of community.

Then, during these past few years’ things changed under new management.

It was becoming clear that park owners and management had other plans and so the move was on to have folks moved on. As a result there has been conflict, leading in some cases to court actions on the part of park residents who felt the actions by park owners and management were unfair and unjustified.

As matters continued to escalate there have been moves (it would seem) in recent times to have residents resettled into homes through state housing programs.

While such an arrangement, hopefully though cooperation between governments and the park owners, should be seen as welcome news, one is left to wonder about the many Tasmanians who have been languishing on the housing waiting list for many years.

Finally, there remains the question of compensation for those park residents who have had to let their dwelling go for a fraction of their value and one feels for those who in the past have had to payout for an entry fee to enter the park.

There are no doubt many more questions and it will be interesting to hear from all Parliamentarians on the matters, both conjectural and factual, raised in the above missive. After all, all of our elected representatives at all levels of government have been well aware of the ongoing crisis at the park for quite some time.

Yours sincerely,

Dr. Philip J Tattersall, Beauty Point 7270
