Business conditions continue to improve in Tasmania

The NAB December Business Survey shows business conditions are continuing to improve in Tasmania.

The latest survey has revealed that business conditions in Tasmania have continued to significantly improve over the last three surveys – rising by 12 index points and sitting at third in the nation.

Treasurer, Guy Barnett, said the Tasmanian Government will continue to back industry and growth.

“Backing business and jobs has continued to keep Tasmania’s economy charging ahead,” the Treasurer said.

“It’s no secret that Tasmania has continued to experience the same economic headwinds being felt across the nation – but Tasmania has continued to demonstrate resilience.

“This latest data from the NAB Business Survey shows that we are heading in the right direction and backed in by our 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania’s Future, we will continue to invest in jobs and opportunities for all Tasmanians.

“This data complements the recent ABS jobs data released earlier in January which confirmed unemployment in Tasmania has remained stable at 4.1 per cent.

“Our unemployment rate remains at historically low levels, we have the highest wage growth in the nation, and we have created 45,000 more jobs since we came to Government.

“The Tasmanian economy has increased to a record $40.6 billion over the past 10 years under our Government. It has grown by $8.5 billion, that’s 26.3 per cent.

“2025 is going to be a big year for Tasmania – and there are promising signs we will continue to make strong progress for all Tasmanians.”

Business confidence remains at rock bottom under Rockliff

Yet another report has shown Tasmania has the worst business confidence in the nation under Jeremy Rockliff’s minority Liberal government.

The NAB monthly business survey shows Tasmania remained in last place for business confidence for the second consecutive month in the wake of the Rockliff minority government’s disastrous handling of the Spirits fiasco.

Tasmania’s peak business body the TCCI famously said that it will be difficult to trust this government again after the Spirits saga, and businesses clearly agree with confidence taking a hit.

Two reports released by two different banks this week have now highlighted the same thing; the Rockliff minority government is bad for jobs, and bad for the economy.

More jobs have been lost since Premier Rockliff took his government into minority than were lost during COVID. Since May 2023, 8,700 Tasmanian jobs have been lost with a thousand of those vanishing in the last two months alone.

Labor’s priority is making sure Tasmanians can find work in well-paid, safe, and secure jobs. We want to see Tasmania be the easiest place to do business so that more job opportunities can be created for Tasmanians.
