Launceston water supply boosted by reservoir expansions
The drinking water of Launceston residents is more secure following the completion of two reservoir expansion projects in the city.
TasWater has now completed construction of additional reservoirs at Windermere and Hillwood, increasing the storage capacity and better safeguarding the city’s water supply.
The two new concrete reservoirs have boosted the storage at Windermere by 300,000 litres and at Hillwood by 350,000 litres.
TasWater’s Head of Major Projects Tim Cubit said an assessment of the Greater Launceston area had revealed capacity deficiencies that needed to be rectified.
“During a comprehensive assessment of all reservoirs in the area, Hillwood and Windermere were identified as areas that needed capacity increase,” Mr Cubit said.
“The new infrastructure boosts the storage volume at Windermere by more than 180 per cent and provides a 109 per cent uplift at Hillwood.”
Mr Cubit said TasWater engaged local contractors Shaw Contracting and Tassie Concrete Tanks to construct the new reservoirs.
“Engaging local contractors is a really important part of any capital project we undertake, and we are committed to supporting Tasmanian businesses and Tasmanian jobs,” he said.
Senior Planning Engineer Joe Davis said the new reservoirs will support the drinking water needs of a growing Launceston.
“Like so many areas around Tasmania, greater Launceston’s population is growing and placing greater pressure on existing infrastructure,” Mr Davis said.
“These expansion projects will improve service reliability for our customers, increase operational flexibility for TasWater, and allow us to better cater for future population growth.”
TasWater is investing $1.9 billion in its network over the next five years to ensure it can continue to deliver exceptional water and sewerage services for a thriving Tasmania.
