Comments on smacking of a child by a parent are not Council policy

Recent comments made by Teeny Brumby that supported a parent’s right to physically discipline their children are strictly her personal view and are not a reflection of Burnie City Council policy.

News reports on the subject identify Mrs Brumby as the Mayor of Burnie City Council and may have led to the incorrect assumption that her comments were being made in her role as the council’s authorised spokesperson. As this is a Tasmanian legislative issue, the council does not have an adopted policy on this matter and Mrs Brumby’s comments should only be considered as personal, not official.
