My job demands me to relocate frequently. Moving used to be a dreadful task for me even if it was a few miles away but not until I learned about downsizing before moving that has simplified my whole life and home too. I understand that moving comes with a daunting to-do list. Whether it is the hiring of moving professionals from movingin.org.uk or start packing your stuff, you get overwhelmed. However, downsizing your home can be the easiest way to lift off some moving tasks, and yes! Lesser stuff to pack. Give this blog post a read to learn about some of my favorite decluttering tricks.
How to Downsize Your Home Before a Move
When you are moving to a new place, not everything in your old home is going to play a role. Hence, it is better to remove such items and move with the least items that go well with your new home and new life. Here is what you can do to downsize your home.
-
Consider the Upcoming Changes
Things are not going to be the same at your new place. You may have a different vision of your new home and a changed lifestyle with fewer kids, more traveling, more homestays, meditation routines, or anything else. Consider the upcoming changes to craft an efficient downsizing plan by analyzing all the items you own and figuring out their purpose at your new place. Create you map of how you want your home to look. However, your place should be relaxing, mess-free, and airy to help you get mental satisfaction.
-
Jot Down What You Own
In this step, you are going to categorise and enlist everything that you own and consider moving them with you to your new place. Take measurements of the furniture and check if it is going to fit in or you have to substitute it with some smaller options. If anything is too large or hard to store, you need to find an appropriate place for them or let them go. Leaving them to lay around can be a hindrance to the functionality and flow of your new home.
-
Declutter Your Home
Once you know what you own, it is the best time to declutter your home. Sort everything into the keep, sell, and donate piles. Sell and donate all the items that you are not going to be using at your new place as there is no point in bringing the baby clothes that your child has outgrown if you are keeping them for the next baby. Now categorize each item from the keep pile and move to the next step.
-
Plan your Move
Give a complete tour of your new home and assess the entire space. Check the inbuilt storage and dimensions of the home to plan how you are going to arrange the interior. Give a second thought to your keep pile according to your new place and virtually assign them a designated place in your new home. These assessments cannot be 100% accurate but give you a good idea to plan your move. It will also give you an idea about what new items you need to get for your new home to maximize its space for effective use. Now, start packing the small items and furniture that are not mostly used.
-
Sack the Extras
The initial decluttering is not enough. You always have an emotional attachment to certain items and you are never willing to let them go easily. Relax! Think about the last time you looked at that thing. Mostly, these are hiding in the corner of our wardrobe or staying in the attic for a long. A better idea is to let someone else make use of it rather than stuffing your limited space. Give it a thought and purge everything your own for the last time while you are packing your entire home for relocation.
Final Words
Are you moving to a new place that is either smaller than your previous or do you want to dedicate some rooms for your new hobbies? downsizing is the best way to make maximum use of the limited space and ensure the flow of your new home. Downsizing is all about two things. Keep what you are going to use and keep what you fit in. Once you adopt it before the moving day, you are ready to make your new place feel like home.
