Invitation – YIMBY, 9 May 2024

Housing a Greater Hobart

Rents in Hobart have risen 60% since 2016. Construction of new dwellings is below what is required to keep up with population growth, and what housing does get built is overwhelmingly standalone dwellings on the urban fringe. This approach doesn’t give people a choice about where and how they live, instead forcing them to commute to see family and friends, or access jobs and services.

Many Australian cities, big and small, now actively prioritise infill development in existing activity centres and along transit corridors. Encouraging development in this way can unlock significant new housing supply, improving affordability and give both renters and buyers greater choice. Hobart’s CBD and existing transit corridors have signifcant underealised potential to house more people close to where they want to be.

The goal of the YIMBY (Yes In My Backyard) movement is more of all kinds of housing, including public and private, rented and owner-occupied, built where people want to live. Join Jonathan O’Brien from YIMBY Melbourne for a discussion of their work advocating for housing abundance through densification of existing neighbourhoods, and what a similar approach could mean for Hobart.
