Media release – Dean Winter, Shadow Minister for Economic Development, 20 February 2024

Liberal candidates more of the same from tired government

The Liberals’ list of candidates for the state election is more evidence of a party that is out of touch and out of ideas after 10 years in government.

Among the candidates is Justin Derksen in the seat of Lyons, whose brother was secretly offered a $1.2 million grant for the New Norfolk Distillery by Jeremy Rockliff, with no process.

It was withdrawn once it became public.

The Liberals are also recycling Eric Abetz and the failed former Human Services Minister Jacquie Petrusma, along with climate change denier Aldo Antolli, anti-vaxxer Julie Sladden, and yet another television personality Rob Fairs.

The Liberals’ northern team now looks more like Ron Burgundy’s news team than serious or competent representatives.

They are also pushing ahead with Jane Howlett who may be under investigation by the Integrity Commission – with the Premier still refusing to tell Tasmanians if this is the case.

The Liberals are also running Giovanna Simpson in Braddon – who was most recently associated with the Jacqui Lambie Network, which the Liberals have spent the past few days attacking.

If this is the ‘Tasmanian Liberal Party’s Team of the Decade’, as Jeremy Rockliff has called it, what a truly disappointing decade it’s been.

After the past decade of Liberal Government, Tasmanians want urgent action on the cost of living, they want to pay Tasmanian prices for Tasmanian power, they want a plan to set Tasmania up for the future and they want a government that cares about them.

It’s time for a better future for Tasmania and the Labor team is focussed on delivering just that.

Kingborough Councillor Antolli: “I am not a believer in anthropogenic climate change.”
