HOBART PAINTED PURPLE TO WELCOME NATIONAL WOMEN’S GROUP FOR FIRST TASMANIAN CONVENTION
Landmarks across Hobart will be lit purple for a week from September 5 to welcome almost 400 women from across the country for the VIEW Clubs of Australia National Convention.
VIEW stands for the Voice, Interests and Education of Women, and is a national organisation boasting more than 14,000 members – including one club in Hobart – dedicated to supporting children’s education charity The Smith Family.
This year’s National Convention is running from September 8-10 and offers members a chance to come together to celebrate the role of women in society; the contribution of members to fundraising and volunteering efforts within their respective communities; and to debate issues of national importance.
Over the three-day National Convention, guests will hear from a stellar line-up, including from official patrons, their Excellencies the Governor-General and Mrs Hurley, as well as Tasmanian historian/author Dr Alison Alexander, former Tasmanian Premier Lara Giddings, and Director of Australia’s Integrated Marine Observing System (IMOS), Dr Michelle Heupel to name a few.
VIEW National President Marg Woodhouse said Convention is a great time to celebrate the achievements of all VIEW Clubs nationally.
“VIEW was established in 1960 by The Smith Family as a service to women and the community – and today our members are proud to support more than 1,680 students on The Smith Family’s Learning for Life program with their education. Our members also help to improve life outcomes of Australian children and young people experiencing disadvantage by volunteering, fundraising and advocating on behalf of The Smith Family.”
She also said it was a great time to reconnect with like-minded women from across the country.
“Some women attend Convention every year to hear from inspirational speakers. It’s also a great social occasion with fantastic themed dinners and a spectacular gala evening with some delegates arriving by ferry.”
“One of the highlights of Convention is also getting to hear from young people who were supported by The Smith Family. This year we will hear from one inspirational young woman who is now giving back to the Tasmanian community as a teacher, because she’s seen the power of education first-hand.”
VIEW members will finish off the weekend with a Community Celebration Walk – wearing VIEW’s signature colour of purple – to celebrate the work they have achieved together in the community. On September 10, hundreds of women will head from the Grand Chancellor Hotel to Queens Domain and onto the Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens, looping back across the Bridge of Remembrance to the Cenotaph before returning to the hotel.
For women in Hobart wishing to join VIEW, the local club is always welcoming new members who want to make connections, while making a difference by supporting a fantastic cause.
The 2023 National Convention will be held at the Grand Chancellor Hotel. For more information, visit www.view.org.au.
