Homelessness Week, 7-13 August 2023
Homelessness Week is a national event held each year during the first week of August, which aims to raise awareness of people experiencing homelessness, the issues they face and the action needed to achieve enduring solutions.
Both the Tasmanian theme for Homelessness Week 2023 – Housing Ends Homelessness – and the national theme – It’s time to end homelessness – make it clear that homelessness is only solved when everyone has a secure home that they can afford.
As the peak body for housing and homelessness in Tasmania, Shelter Tas has been co-ordinating planning for Homelessness Week events throughout the state this year, and is showcasing all the fantastic activities that have been organised in the Homelessness Week Events Calendar located on the Shelter Tas website.
This year, Homelessness Week includes a wide range of activities and events, including purple lights – the colour of homelessness awareness. Keep a look out around Hobart, Launceston, Devonport and Ulverstone, as public buildings and landmarks such as the Tasman Bridge and the penguin in Penguin will be decorated purple all week.
There are digital and live events including films, breakfasts, walks and exhibitions where people can learn more about homelessness in the community, the solutions that can end homelessness and hear the stories of people with lived experience of homelessness, and their stories of resilience and success.
Make sure you come along to some events, show your support for the organisations working hard towards ending homelessness, and our fellow Tasmanians who have experienced, or who are currently experiencing homelessness, housing stress and housing insecurity.
You can also support Homelessness Week by using the hashtags #HW2023, #HousingEndsHomelessness, #EverybodysHome on social media, wearing purple out and about during the week, or using the information on the Shelter Tas website to start a conversation.
