Star of David to remain a ‘Cane
The Hobart Hurricanes have secured the contract extension of another top-tier player, with superstar Tim David putting pen to paper in a deal which will see him remain at the club until at least 2025.
The right-handed, middle-order batter – who still has one year left on his current deal with the club – has signed a one-year contract extension, which will extend his overall tenure with the club to span at least five seasons.
David’s star continued to rise in 2022, with the West Australian native being the Hurricanes’ most prolific batter in BBL|12. Batting at number five, David amassed 354 runs at an average of 39.33 and strike rate of 160.91 for the season, and went on to hit a whopping 44 boundaries – 18 of them maximums.
David’s switch to the Hurricanes in 2020, after three seasons with the Perth Scorchers, saw him break out as not only one of Australia’s but one of the world’s best Twenty20 talents. Since then, he has gone to ply his trade right across the world’s top T20 leagues, including the Indian Premier League (IPL), Pakistan Super League (PSL), Caribbean Premier League (CPL), SA T20 (South Africa), and The Hundred (UK), as well as break into the Australian T20 side in 2022, just in time for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup.
David’s next assignment will be in a location that is lesser-known for its cricket – the USA – where he will be partaking in the inaugural season of the Major League Cricket, with the MI New York franchise.
The 27-year-old said he was excited by locking in his future with the Hurricanes beyond the upcoming season.
“I am very happy to be extending with the Hurricanes for the next couple of years,” David said.
“While I am playing a lot of my cricket overseas, I feel at home amongst my teammates and support staff in the Hurricanes set up, and I am hopeful that I can contribute more to this group going forward.”
Of the ‘Canes chances in BBL|13, David said he was confident of his side’s chances of returning to playing finals cricket.
“We didn’t play well enough, consistently last season which was naturally disappointing. I am very excited to be a part of this team, because the biggest challenge I see for us is to be able to get the best out of our group. We have a really strong core of local players in important roles, and I believe we are good enough to be challenging at the back end of the season.
“We had a great record in our home games both in Hobart and Launceston, we love the support we get from playing in front of our home crowd and engaging with our fans around games.
“We got over the line in a couple of nailbiters – I can think of the game against the Heat in Launceston and then the Christmas game against the Renegades in Hobart off the top of my head – we probably couldn’t have done without the home support and backing of our fans, so I’m looking forward to playing in front of those kinds of crowds again this season in Tasmania.”
“I’m also looking forward to the shorter home and away season this year,” David continues. “Each game is going to count for more, and it was so encouraging to see the excitement and spectacle of the BBL towards the back end of last season, with a number of high-quality players returning to play in our competition.”
David joins Paddy Dooley, Nathan Ellis, Peter Hatzoglou, Caleb Jewell, Ben McDermott, Riley Meredith, Mitch Owen, Billy Stanlake and Matthew Wade as Hurricanes currently contracted for BBL|13.
In more exciting news for Hurricanes fans, today the League officially released the full, new-look BBL|13 fixture, where each club will now play 10 regular-season games in an exciting, condensed-season format.
After it was revealed earlier in this week that this year’s Christmas game would be played on December 23 in Hobart – and be a re-match of last year’s nail-biting clash between the Hurricanes and the Renegades – the League has revealed a set of five-game home fixtures in Tasmania, starting with the Hurricanes kicking off their BBL|13 campaign in Launceston on December 11.
The Hurricanes will then play three matches at Blundstone Arena during the Christmas-New Year period, following by their final home fixture of the regular season on January 14, also in Hobart.
The Hurricanes full BBL|13 home-and-away fixture is outlined below, with the BBL|13 Finals series is scheduled to commence from January 19.
