Media release – Tender Funerals Tasmania, 11 July 2023
Hear the beginning of our story on Australian Story
In 2022, ABC’s Australian Story televised a ground-breaking documentary on the beginnings of Tender Funerals in Australia. This documentary highlighted the significant needs required in the community, such as ours, on after-death care choices, and to establish a local community-run not-for-profit funeral service. The re-airing of this episode on the 14th of July will raise again the need in the community on providing personalised and meaningful funerals.
Our aim at Tender Funerals Tasmania is to deliver funeral services that can provide unique opportunities for creating funerals that are accessible, meaningful and support healthy bereavement practises in diverse communities across our area.
At its very core, we want to build capacity for people in Tasmania to participate in the transformational qualities of a good process when someone dies. Death is a right of passage, and we believe it can be participated in, learned from, deeply understood and community owned. It has the capacity to be transformational – opening the possibilities of healthy bereavement and a profound appreciation for being human and alive.
We encourage people to watch our story on Australian Story and get involved in helping our local community create this new and dynamic social venture! The program will be televised on the ABC at 5pm, 14 July or you can also watch it on ABC iView.

About Tender Funerals Tasmania
Tender Funerals was invited into our Tasmanian community in 2019. As a group of committed volunteers, we have worked tirelessly since this time to raise funds, awareness and support to establish the Tender Funerals model of care in our state, enabling greater choice with access to affordable, beautiful and meaningful funerals for everyone.
Our first crowdfunding campaign was held in 2021 which provided the foundation from which we could begin to bring our vision into being with this vision needing to change over time.
Currently, we are aiming to establish two smaller funeral homes to service northern and southern Tasmania and at a later date, one to service the north west and west coast communities. We hope to engage a Tasmanian company to build relocatable pods – our ‘Tiny Tenders’.
Lynne Jarvis for Tender Funerals Tasmania says, “We are excited to be setting up Tender Funerals across lutruwita/Tasmania, and we are so grateful for the support we have received from community members this far. We welcome community involvement for our next steps in getting an operational site.” Please visit our website for more information on how to get involved.
