Unveiling The Ark: A Safe Haven for Youth and Community
On July 26, 2023, at 11 am, Launceston City Mission proudly unveiled a remarkable project aimed at providing a nurturing space for children, youth, and families – The Ark Youth and Community Centre. Designed to offer comprehensive support for the journey from childhood to adulthood, The Ark is set to become a long-term asset for our community.
The Ark project had its genesis in August 2019, following the acquisition of what was formerly known as Avalon at 9 Killafaddy Road. Our City Mission had a vision to transform this space into a refuge for children and young adults, encapsulating the safety of the biblical Ark amid a stormy world. Today, that vision has become a reality.
Stephen Brown, CEO of City Mission, shared, “We envisaged The Ark as a safe haven for children and youth. All kids deserve that. Many issues we see in people later in life often stem from experiences between the ages of 0 to 12. Providing a safe environment can facilitate healing and growth, and that’s precisely what we’re aiming to offer.”
Since mid-July, The Ark has been hosting a range of City Mission programs aimed at different age groups and community segments. Inside Out for Kids promotes emotional literacy for primary school students; The Mish supports teenagers transitioning into adulthood; and Mission 2 a Future helps individuals build pathways to education, employment, mentoring them to gain the confidence to achieve their goals.
In addition, The Ark now serves as the home for City Mission’s Community Development team, working tirelessly to support individuals in neighbouring communities.
The grand opening of The Ark Youth and Community Centre was officiated by Her Excellency the Honourable Barbara Baker AC, Governor of Tasmania.
As Stephen Brown emphasised, “The Ark will be a long-term asset for the people of this community as we work with children, young people, and parents. We’re looking forward to the future, equipped with flexibility and safe spaces, ready to respond to the community’s needs.”
