13 New High-tech Traffic Screens Coming to Southern Tasmania
New ‘variable message signs’ (VMS) are being rolled out across Hobart, as part of a new initiative by State Growth to keep Tasmanian road users informed.
The sign installed near the Hobart Airport Interchange this week is the first of 13 overhead signs to be installed on the major commuter routes around Hobart. The system also includes two Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) cameras.
Testing of the signs is already underway.
“The information will go live once testing is successfully completed, which is expected to take about a month,” a State Growth spokesperson said.
“[This sign has] been installed as part of the Hobart Airport Interchange contract but will integrate with the Department of State Growth’s On-road Traveller Information System (OTIS)”.
The installation of additional VMS and CCTV cameras will allow road users to make informed decisions about their travel routes in real time in response to changing traffic conditions due to weather, crashes or other unplanned incidents.
VMS will allow the State Roads Traffic Management Centre to communicate messages in real time to road users who are already on the road, advising of changed traffic conditions due to weather, crashes or other unplanned incidents. When not required for incident response, the VMS will display road safety messages and or current travel times to key destinations.
Information captured by the CCTV cameras will only be used by the Traffic Management Centre (TMC) for the purpose of monitoring traffic and road conditions.
