Notice – Friends of Palestine Tasmania, 10 May 2023

Saturday 13 May – Nakba – Catastrophe – 75 years

On Saturday 13th May, we have an important program of activities to commemorate 75 years since 1948, of the ongoing Nakba, or catastrophe, when Palestinians were removed from or fled their lands. Tasmania is playing its part in national events on this day.

In nipaluna/Hobart we will hold a vigil, with speakers and music, at 11 am on Parliament Lawns. We will be in the central area of the Lawns – note that there is an anti-stadium rally on the Lawns at 12 noon.

An inspiring sight will be the Palestinian flag flying high above Hobart – look to the top of the building on the corner of Bathurst and Watchorn Streets on Saturday 13th and Monday 15th.

In Launceston there will be a seminar on Colonising Palestine at 4pm at UTAS, with Palestinian-Australian Dr Adel Yousif, Senator Anne Urquhart who has visited Palestine and is active in Labor Friends of Palestine, and a Human Rights Monitor recently returned from Palestine as part of the the EAPPI program.

You may have seen or heard about the accusations from a very small, very conservative organisation that made the front page of the Examiner recently. We were pleased that the university was not cowed by this and asserted its commitment to free speech. The cost for this event is $7 – and there will be delicious food served (book here  https://www.trybooking.com/events/landing?eid=1046966)).

See our website  or FaceBook page for more information about Friends of Palestine Tasmania and our activities.
