Petition Against Proposed New Hobart Stadium
Petition – Janice Overett, retrieved 1 May 2023
NO – AFL Stadium in Hobart – Wrong Priority
Tasmania cannot afford a new $750 million AFL stadium.
The Tasmanian people want investments in our failing healthcare system, in more public housing, in aged care facilities, rural & regional access to essential services, public transport, education and public infrastructure that serves all Tasmanians. Much of our state is already facing a cost-of-living crisis, and although this is a much larger issue, is a new AFL stadium that is predicted to cost the taxpayer over $1 billion in the next 20 years a necessity?
Tasmania has two AFL grade stadiums already, one within three kilometres of the proposed site. A further $65 million has already been pledged by the federal government to upgrade York Park in Launceston, with the proposed stadium in Hobart only creating an extra 3000 seats in comparison to its other close counterpart at Bellerive Oval.
The city of Hobart is already at a gridlock, effectively bursting at the seams during any major event. Further congestion is inevitable if a supposed 20,000 patrons are flocking to the city during each AFL game with the current state of transport and roads.
Tasmania has been bullied into this agreement by AFL CEO Gillon McLachlan. Mindlessly spending a significant portion of our states yearly budget on a needless stadium is clearly not the only option available in order for Tasmania to join the AFL.
The State Government must reconsider their priorities.
